Richard Jones

Winner of the club championship in 1885 and 1889.

... Richard Jones about whom I have been unable to find any information outside of a six year period. He does not seem to have been a member of the Hastings CC in its first season, but we find him representing the club in a match against Dover at the end of 1883. He did not play in Sussex's first ever county match away to Surrey (at Croydon) in January 1884, but he took a board in the return match at Brighton in May of that year. I think that if you consult your club's early minute book, you will find that he was the secretary by about 1884. He continued to play regularly for the county and to represent Hastings in matches. At the end of 1888 we find him giving an 8 board simultaneous at the Hailsham CC, winning 6 of the games with the other two (in which he had very favourable positions) being left unfinished. On that occasion he was reported to be acting as a representative of the Sussex Chess Association, so perhaps he held a committee position with the county. He became a member of the association in the 1885-86 season and his address is listed as The Dispensary, High Street, Hastings. He represented Hastings in a match against Brighton played about Eastertime 1889, but after the 1888-89 season his name seems to disappear from county records. The obvious suggestion is that he moved house, but if this is so, I am afraid that at the moment I do not know where to. Overall he was a player strong enough to play in the Sussex team, but he was not amongst the strongest players in the county. I enclose a couple of his games:
